So, this project was not actually a project from the past Christmas season, but from early 2010, when I saw a myriad of riffs on this concept on the crafty interwebbian sites I like to troll through. It seemed very simple, but was actually quite a large undertaking -- you use a styrofoam ball as the base for each "yarn ball" but it still takes forever to wrap all of the needed balls. However, it was a pretty inexpensive project. I bought the wreath frame and Christmas ornaments on sale at Michael's and used the many, many skeins of white yarn that I inherited from my grandmother for the rest of it.
This project also marks my first usage of a glue gun in many, many years. I tried to do it with tacky glue but it didn't work (nor did I have the patience to hold 20+ yarn balls together, two at a time, to get them to adhere). When I used a glue gun in the past, I always burned myself or thought I was burning myself. (An aside: I have an irrational fear of burning myself and won't touch even mildly hot things because of this. I will never, ever work in a commercial kitchen because of this.) This time, I was very careful, and it worked perfectly.
I decided to make this my January/Epiphany wreath for my door, since I usually buy an evergreen wreath over Christmas. I like how it's bright, cheerful and reminds me of snow.
